Pelosi Statement on Historic Selection of Women Ranking Members

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today announcing that Congresswoman Maxine Waters will serve as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services and that Congresswoman Nita Lowey will serve as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Appropriations.  Both are the first women to serve in these roles:

“The incoming 113th Congress will feature the first majority women and minority Caucus in history – and it is only fitting that women will pay an historic role in leading our committees.  With Congresswoman Nita Lowey at the top of the Appropriations Committee and Congresswoman Maxine Waters at the helm of the Financial Services Committee, women have broken another marble ceiling.

“Throughout her service on the Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Lowey has acted as a fierce advocate for the best interests of the American people, at home and around the world.  As the first woman to hold her new post, she will continue to fight for investments that strengthen the middle class and spur our prosperity.

“Congresswoman Waters is no stranger to bold leadership in the name of working families throughout Los Angeles and across the country.  On the Financial Services Committee, she will build on her record of service to ensure the voices of mothers, seniors, and the middle class have a place at the table.

“Both women bring decades of experience and a commitment to public service to their new positions.  By increasing the diversity in our leadership, we will help ensure that all Americans are represented here in the people’s House.”
