San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today announcing an additional $20 million in cleanup funds to be equally distributed for the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and Treasure Island Naval Station. The increased funding was part of a $60 million increase above the President’s budget in the Base Realignment and Closure account signed into law as part of the recent Continuing Resolution funding measure.
“The complete cleanup of Hunters Point is long past due. Bayview residents have waited nearly 40 years for the Navy to fulfill its commitments while experiencing the highest rates of asthma and breast and cervical cancer in San Francisco.
“Our work also continues on Treasure Island where we work to transform the remnants of a naval station into a vibrant new community. Both Hunters Point and Treasure Island will soon provide affordable housing and recreational space as well as economic growth and jobs for San Franciscans. I will continue to fight alongside Senators Feinstein and Boxer, and Mayor Lee as we revitalize these neighborhoods and reinvigorate our city."
