Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi announced the following staff changes today in the Leader’s Press Office with Ashley Etienne as Deputy Communications Director, Evangeline George as Press Secretary, Jonathan Powell as Director of Speechwriting, and Ryan King as Press Advisor. Last month, Pelosi named longtime press aide Drew Hammill as Communications Director and Senior Advisor.
"With 49 new Democratic Members, the communications Office is retooling to support our expanded Caucus,” said Pelosi. “Ensuring that our new Members and our entire Caucus of 200 plus Members have the resources they need will continue to be a top priority of my office in the 113th Congress, and the excellence of this team underscores that commitment."
Ashley Etienne comes to the Leader’s Press Office from the Oversight and Government Reform Democratic Staff. Etienne served as Communications Director to Ranking Member Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and built the press operation for Committee Democrats. Etienne was previously a spokesperson for the Corporation for National and Community Service, and has served in communications roles for several Members of the Texas delegation, including Congressman Al Green and former Congressmen Chris Bell and Ken Bentsen. She is a native of Houston and has an undergraduate degree in political science from Sam Houston University and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University in political communications.
Evangeline George began working for Pelosi in January 2009 in the correspondence office. She was quickly promoted to the Press Office as Press Assistant and then Press Advisor in January 2011. Ms. George took leave from the Office of the Democratic Leader last year to serve as Communications Director for the Sean Patrick Maloney for Congress campaign. She is a native of Marietta, GA and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in political science.
Jonathan Powell will serve as the Director of Speechwriting for Leader Pelosi. Jonathan has worked as a speechwriter for Pelosi since 2009. Powell previously served as Director of Speechwriting and Deputy Press Secretary to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. He is a Los Angeles native and holds an undergraduate degree in political science and international studies from Northwestern University.
Ryan King has been promoted to Press Advisor. King has been with the Press Office since August 2011. He previously served as an intern for the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund and Leadership Institute. A native of Sacramento, he holds an undergraduate degree in history and political science from the University of California at Berkeley.
