Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi joined Congressman George Miller (D-CA), Congressman Ruben Hinojosa (D-NM), Congressman John Tierney (D-MA), Congressman Joe Courtney (D-CT), and college students to call on House Republicans to act to prevent student loan rates from doubling on July 1st. Below are her remarks:
“What you see before you are our champions, they are – it is the face of the future – and lined up here are some of the champions, our hall of famers, on this issue. Congressman George Miller, Congressman Joe Courtney, Congressman Ruben Hinojosa, Congressman John Tierney, [Congresswoman] Karen Bass – who is going to be joining us. We are right in the middle of votes. So be very, very happy because we’ve all had to cut our remarks short.
“But I just want to say, we come together to join the students, our leaders, who are delivering a message to Washington. It is the same message that John F. Kennedy sent in a letter to Congress over 50 years ago. He said: ‘Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. Our requirements for world leadership, our hopes for economic growth, and the demands of citizenship itself require the maximum development of every young American’s capacity.’
“There is no better – well, end of quote.
“There is no better way to ensure our progress as a country than by putting a college education within reach of every student. Do you agree?
“Alright! So, now I am pleased to yield to one of the leaders of the future, Samson Armstrong. Here we go Samson. There we go.”
