Pelosi Statement on House Republican Agreement on Deep Cuts to Food, Nutrition Assistance Initiatives

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to reports that House Republicans have agreed on a bill that cuts $40 billion from nutrition programs:

“Once again, House Republicans are blatantly displaying a wanton disregard for the basic needs of nearly 50 million vulnerable Americans.  For decades, nutrition programs in the Farm Bill have offered food security to millions of families across the country; yet House Republicans, with no shame, have decided to take food from the mouths of children and seniors.

“This outrageous and callous agreement slashes $40 billion from SNAP and other critical nutrition programs – double what they originally proposed and more than ten times what the Senate seamlessly passed in a bipartisan vote.  Rather than moving forward to pass a full Farm Bill, Republicans are doubling down on a failed strategy that only serves to undermine the health of millions of Americans and has no chance of becoming law.

“House Republicans’ failure to pass their comprehensive five-year Farm Bill, or subsequent partisan bills, should compel them to work with Democrats on behalf of the food and economic security of hardworking Americans.  It’s time for Republicans to trade in their pointless and partisan agenda for responsible solutions that will promote, expand, and strengthen America’s middle class.”
