Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the 165th anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention, the first women’s rights convention that addressed women in social, economic, and political life.
“One hundred and sixty-five years ago, a small gathering of extraordinary women shook the world with a simple notion: that all men and women are created equal. In a bold and unambiguous declaration of sentiments, the visionaries of Seneca Falls called on our country to finally make the ideals of our democracy a reality for America’s mothers, wives, and daughters; to ensure that every freedom, every liberty, and every right belongs to every American.
“That rebellious demand gave birth to 165 years of progress for women. We stand on the shoulders of giants, and we pick up the mantle of their fight to ensure every woman has the power to reach her potential. That is why House Democrats unveiled, ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families.’ This agenda advances three core pillars of economic security for women and families: fair pay, work and life balance, and affordable child care for all families.
“These initiatives will help unleash the power of American women, promote the prosperity of American families, and strengthen the middle class – the backbone of American democracy. In setting this foundation, we carry on the work that began 165 years ago to ensure that future generations of women enjoy the equal rights, equal treatment, and equal opportunities that they deserve.”
