Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on President Obama’s announcement that he intends to nominate Assistant Attorney General Tom Perez to serve as the next Secretary of Labor:
“Today, President Obama reiterated his firm commitment to the rights of workers and the strength of the middle class by nominating Tom Perez as our country’s next Secretary of Labor.
“At the Justice Department, Assistant Attorney General Perez has stood as a champion of voting rights and led the fight against all forms of discrimination. At the Labor Department, he will be a stalwart advocate for fair wages and safe working conditions, equal pay for equal work, protections for every worker, including farm workers and LGBT Americans, and the rights of labor to bargain collectively and to organize.
“In every office and position of leadership, Tom Perez has proven himself a qualified leader and a capable public servant. As the son of immigrants, he has lived the American Dream – and as Secretary of Labor, he will keep working to reignite the American Dream for every American. I commend President Obama on his selection and I look forward to working with Secretary-designate Tom Perez to advance the cause of fairness, opportunity, and equality nationwide.”
