Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) issued its cost estimate for the Senate’s bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill, finding that the legislation would reduce the deficit by $175 billion in the coming decade and by another $700 billion in the following decade:
“Today offers more evidence that comprehensive immigration reform is good for our economy, good for deficit reduction, good for our workforce, and good for the future of our country. Indeed, the non-partisan CBO makes it clear: reform would expand growth, boost GDP, increase capital investment, and raise productivity.
“CBO released its findings on the same day that Republicans decided to take up a partisan, enforcement-only bill in the House Judiciary Committee that undermines progress toward a bipartisan agreement. This cost estimate strengthens the case for fixing our broken immigration system with commonsense steps to secure our borders, protect our workers, unite families, and offer an earned pathway to citizenship.
“The American people support comprehensive immigration reform; bipartisan leaders in Congress are working to advance the cause of reform; and now, we have even greater proof that this measure will mark a significant step forward for our nation. The time is now to enact comprehensive legislation that preserves our values, reflects the character of our country, and strengthens our democracy.”
