San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to California’s Rim Fire, which at more than 179,000 acres makes it the seventh-largest fire in state history.
“Our thoughts and prayers rest with California residents and all those feeling the devastating impact of California’s Rim Fire. As the flames continue to spread across Northern California, our hearts go out to all those who have been forced into shelters and face the horrifying prospect of losing their homes, businesses, and livelihoods to this terrible blaze.
“We owe an immeasurable gratitude to the thousands of firefighters and first responders who are standing in harm’s way to ensure the safety and security of California homes and residents, and the preservation of our spectacular forest and parkland. And thanks to the tireless and effective work of the San Francisco Public Utility Commission, our city’s water supply and power systems currently remain safe from the encroaching fire and ash.
“Governor Jerry Brown’s leadership has been indispensable in effectively responding to this emergency, and we thank President Obama for quickly providing necessary resources to support our firefighters in their dangerous but vital work – including fast approval of the Fire Management Assistance Grant providing federal support for 75 percent of the state's eligible firefighting costs. In the days ahead, Congress will continue to monitor the state of the Rim Fire and stand ready to support state and local emergency personnel in their work to protect every resident affected by this disaster.”
