Pelosi Statement on Cesar Chavez Day

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in honor of the 86th anniversary of Cesar Chavez's birthday, which falls on Sunday, March 31st:

"The life of Cesar Chavez is a story of persistence, passion, and perseverance in the name of the common good, of workers' rights and civil rights, of equality, opportunity, and justice for Hispanic Americans and all Americans.  He led a boycott in the Central Valley of California and inspired progress for our country; he shone a light on the plight of farmworkers and advanced the cause of fair wages, safer working conditions, and better benefits for all workers; he spurred a local movement of non-violence and ignited a national movement for fairness.

"Today, the spirit of Cesar Chavez lives on in our ongoing fight for progress for the Hispanic community and for the American people.  It continues in the fight to make the minimum wage a living wage and to ensure equal pay for equal work.  It goes on in the struggle to protect the rights of voters and citizens no matter what their race or background.  It inspires our drive to respect our borders, advance our values, respect our history as a nation of immigrants, and enact comprehensive immigration reform.

"On the 86th anniversary of Cesar Chavez's birth, we recall a man, a message, and a mission that transcends communities and generations.  We remember his call that 'our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.'  We remain inspired to realize the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of all Americans, for the sake of the prosperity of our families, the progress of our workers, and the success of our country."
