Pelosi Statement on December Jobs Report

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 74,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.7 percent. December marks the 46th consecutive month of private sector job growth, adding 8.2 million jobs.

“Today’s jobs report proves that while our economy is still making progress we still have work to do – especially for Americans still struggling to find a job and make ends meet.

“Unfortunately, instead of working with Democrats to create jobs and strengthen the ladders of opportunity, Republicans are insisting on leaving millions of Americans out in the cold.  Republicans’ refusal to extend emergency unemployment insurance has plunged 1.4 million unemployed Americans and their families into crisis, threatening to cost the economy 240,000 jobs this year.  The need to extend emergency unemployment insurance is especially acute at time when the rate of long-term unemployment is almost double what it was the last time Congress allowed this critical lifeline to lapse.

“Congress must extend emergency unemployment insurance, and get to work creating good-paying jobs and ensuring that hard working families gain the economic security they deserve.  It is time to raise the minimum wage to deliver long overdue fairness through a pay raise for millions of working men and women.  Republicans should abandon their obstructionism, and work with Democrats to move our economy and our country forward.”
