Pelosi Statement on the Fourth Anniversary of the Citizens United Decision

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which overturned a century of common-sense campaign finance laws and allowed unlimited corporate and special interest donations into our campaigns:

“On this date four years ago, the Supreme Court opened the floodgates to special interest money in our campaigns, undermining our democracy, upending fairness and transparency in our elections, and altering the face of our politics.

“Since that day, Americans have seen the impact of the ill-advised Citizens United decision play out on their televisions and radios – in the actions, advertisements, and activities of unregulated SuperPACs and unlimited mega-donors with no interest in a level playing field or an open and honest debate.  This result betrays the promise and vision of our nation's founders: of a democracy shaped by the voices of the people, not the pocketbooks of the privileged few.

“From the moment the Supreme Court issued its ruling, congressional Democrats have fought to enact clear and critical reforms that would restore accountability to our elections.  It is long past time to act on our agenda - to ensure disclosure of all donors, to amend the Constitution and overturn Citizens United, to reform our campaign finance laws, and to empower small donors and the grassroots in our elections.  Indeed, it is long past time to make real the belief that sunlight is the best of disinfectants, and to shine a bright light of truth and fairness on our political campaigns.”
