Pelosi Statement on July Jobs Report

Washington, D.C. - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 162,000 jobs and the unemployment rate fell to 7.4 percent in July.  With businesses adding 161,000 workers, this marks the 41st consecutive month of private sector job growth:

“Today’s jobs numbers show some progress for our economy, but not nearly enough growth for our workers and families.  It must remain our central task to address the top priorities of the American people: to create jobs, to spur growth, and to strengthen the middle class.

“Unfortunately, House Republicans have shown little interest in producing anything more than distraction, dysfunction, and delay.  As Republicans prepare to face their constituents, their record is certainly nothing to write home about – with no jobs bills, no budget agreement, no results for the middle class.  All the while, as non-partisan analysts show sequestration costing us nearly a million jobs by the end of next year, Republicans have refused to take a single action to replace these devastating cuts this year.

“Americans want jobs and opportunity, not more Republican obstruction and inaction.  Democrats are interested in a solution-based budget that creates jobs, replaces the Republican sequester, and responsibly reduces the deficit.  Let’s work together to reignite the American Dream by putting people to work, expanding our economy, and building a broadly-shared prosperity for all.”
