Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which falls this coming Monday, January 21:
“On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Americans commemorate and celebrate two extraordinary moments in the history of our country and in our pursuit of a more equal, more just, and more perfect union: the upcoming 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s story of his remarkable dream and the second inauguration of President Barack Obama.
“Together, we will remember the words that moved a nation to overcome a legacy of bigotry and injustice, and embrace the cause of equality and civil rights. We will take inspiration from the vision, values, wisdom, and character of our President. We will renew our commitment to act – in the spirit of our best traditions – to build the ‘beloved community’ sought by Dr. King and advanced by the millions who followed in his footsteps.
“As we honor this day and watch the President take the oath of office once more, let us keep striving to live up to Dr. King’s hopes for our nation – his dream of equality, of jobs and economic justice, workers’ rights and opportunity, of peace and prosperity in our country and beyond our borders. Let us complete the work he started, strengthen the cause of freedom, and make real the promise of progress for all of God’s children.”
