Pelosi: New Analysis Shows Lower-Than-Expected Premiums, Increased Competition in Health Insurance Marketplaces

Washington, D.C. - Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on a new report from the Department of Health and Human Services showing that consumers will see increased competition in the Health Insurance Marketplaces and that premiums nationwide will be roughly 16 percent lower than originally expected before taking into account financial assistance:

“This new analysis makes it clear: the Affordable Care Act means more competition, more choices, and greater affordability for America's consumers.  This latest HHS report demonstrates, once again, that this landmark law will make health plans affordable and put insurance coverage in reach for middle class workers and families.

“Each measure of success for health care reform exposes the latest Republican gambit for what it is: a manufactured crisis that threatens to shut down the government, put insurance companies back in charge, and force working families and patients to pay the price.  That is the last thing our country and our economy need.

“As Health Insurance Marketplaces come online, we must act to ensure that the protections of the law strengthen all the health and health care of all Americans – and that partisan distractions are not allowed to undermine the health and economic security of the American people.”
