Pelosi Statement on the Nomination of Dr. Janet Yellen as the First Woman to Chair the Federal Reserve

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama nominated Dr. Janet Yellen to head the Federal Reserve.  If confirmed, Yellen, who currently serves as Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve System’s Board of Governors, will be the first woman to serve as Chairwoman of the Federal Reserve.

“President Obama’s decision to nominate Dr. Janet Yellen to head the Federal Reserve marks yet another historic step for women, for our economy, and for our country.  With her exceptional economic expertise, her extensive experience inside the Federal Reserve, and her unwavering dedication to fighting inflation, reducing unemployment, and promoting America’s economic growth, Dr. Yellen has more than earned her seat at the head of the table.

“A proud daughter of New York, Dr. Yellen quickly became a leader in the field of economics in the Bay Area.  Before joining the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors in 2010, she served as a Professor Emeritus at University of California-Berkeley and as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, which covers the largest district and helps promote financial stability and security for 60 million Americans.  It is with that proven record of leadership that Dr. Yellen will ensure that our country remains the engine of a robust, vibrant, and thriving global economy.

“As our economy continues on its steady growth, it is more important than ever that America and nations across the globe have a brilliant mind and a steady hand at the helm of the Federal Reserve.  Dr. Yellen’s historic nomination only serves to reaffirm that, when we unleash the power of America’s women, we will begin to build a bright and boundless future for generations to come.”
