Pelosi Statement on President Obama’s ‘Grand Bargain for Middle Class Jobs’

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to President Obama’s proposal to create a better bargain for the middle class:

“Today, President Obama asked Congress to put partisan agendas aside and refocus our attention on the top priorities of the American people.  After waiting more than 200 days for House Republicans to pass a single jobs bill, Democrats are eager to act to invest in American businesses, create good-paying jobs, and expand the middle class – the backbone of our democracy.

“The President’s proposal makes clear that any simplification of the tax code to keep businesses and manufacturers globally competitive must eliminate loopholes that ship American jobs overseas.  It also makes critical investments to create good-paying jobs by creating growth and support for American manufacturing, innovation, infrastructure, and workforce training.  This ‘grand bargain’ establishes a foundation for a broadly-shared prosperity and a strong and thriving middle class.

“For too long, Republicans in Congress have ignored, deferred, or rejected every opportunity to put the well-being of the American people before their partisan political games.  It is time for House Republicans to work with the President and House Democrats to advance an economic agenda that responsibly reduces our deficit, invests in our workforce, and guarantees a robust, thriving economy for future generations.”
