Washington, D.C. – House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of Congressman Ike Skelton of Missouri, former Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee:
“It is with deep sadness that my colleagues and I learned of the passing of Congressman Ike Skelton, a dear friend and a selfless patriot who led with humility and put his country and constituents first.
“For 34 years, Congressman Skelton lived up to our first and foremost duty to protect the American people and defend the Constitution. As Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, he fought to bridge what he called ‘a chasm between those who protect our freedoms and those who are being protected.’ From their quality of life to their readiness for war, he made sure that every man and woman in uniform who put their lives on the line would receive the support they had earned and the deepest respect they deserved.
“A proud son of Missouri, Congressman Skelton's quiet confidence and unwavering conviction is a tribute to his roots and a testament to the political courage that defines the best traditions of leadership. We only hope it is a comfort to his wife Patty and his children that so many people mourn their loss at this sad time.”
