Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after President Obama announced his intention to appoint Ambassador Susan Rice as his next National Security Advisor and to nominate Samantha Power as our country’s next Ambassador to the United Nations:
“Today, President Obama named two strong, experienced, dedicated leaders to continue the Administration’s work of solidifying our alliances abroad, ensuring our national security at home, and promoting American leadership for peace, progress, and prosperity across the globe.
“Susan Rice’s career and expertise make her an ideal replacement for Tom Donilon as National Security Advisor. From her work at the State Department to her leadership at the United Nations, she has been unwavering in her defense of American values and interests, in her commitment to American and global security, and in her efforts to restore America’s role in international institutions.
“Whether in journalism or in government, Samantha Power has emerged as a leading champion of human rights, a critical voice for international cooperation, and a tireless advocate of American leadership. She recognizes the vital need to expand basic freedoms of speech and assembly worldwide; she understands the complexities of today’s challenges and has acted to address them.
“Both of these leaders have earned the respect of their colleagues and the trust of the President. I commend President Obama on these choices for these critical national security posts.”
