Pelosi Statement on Proposed Carbon Pollution Standards for New Power Plants

Washington D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Environmental Protection Agency announced newly proposed carbon pollution standards for future power plants:

“Today, the Obama Administration took a strong step to address the devastating impacts of climate change.  By creating new standards to limit carbon pollution from future power plants, the Environmental Protection Agency is acting to protect the health and well-being of our children, our communities, and our country. 

“The amount of carbon pollution in our atmosphere is a grave threat to our public health – increasing the risk of asthma attacks and premature deaths among children, seniors, and our most vulnerable populations.  Power plants are the largest concentrated source of these emissions, accounting for nearly one-third of all domestic greenhouse gas emissions.  The EPA’s proposed standards offer the first national limit on carbon pollution from new power plants and should join standards already in place that reduce mercury, arsenic and lead from our air and water – without impacting electricity prices or stability.
