Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after Congressman Rush Holt announced that he will be retiring from Congress at the end of this term:
“For the past 15 years, Congressman Rush Holt has represented Central New Jersey with energy, creativity, an innovative spirit and an unyielding commitment to the needs, aspirations, and best interests of his constituents.
“A scientist and educator to his core, Congressman Holt has remained a staunch advocate in the drive to improve STEM education, invest in scientific research, and develop the latest technologies and industries right here in the United States. From the Education and Workforce Committee to the Natural Resources Committee, his name has become synonymous with leadership in expanding stem cell research, increasing funding for the National Science Foundation, and strengthening our infrastructure in sustainable development, renewable energy, and environmental health.
“When Democrats held the majority in the House, from 2007 to 2011, Congressman Holt served with distinction as the Chairman of the Select Intelligence Oversight Panel, acting to ensure that Americans’ civil liberties were safeguarded, their rights respected, and their security preserved.
“New Jersey’s 12th district and the scientific community will lose a strong defender and powerful voice with the retirement of Congressman Rush Holt. His leadership, commitment, and intelligence will be missed in the halls of Congress. We look forward to watching how he continues to contribute to the progress of our country, and we wish him and his family the best in the years to come.”
