Pelosi Statement on the Retirement of Congressman Henry Waxman

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after Congressman Henry Waxman announced that he would not seek re-election this year:

“For the past four decades, Congressman Henry Waxman’s name has been synonymous with responsible action, extraordinary legislative skill, passionate public service, and bold leadership on behalf of Los Angeles, California, and the American people.

“Henry Waxman’s imprint can be found on legislation addressing some of our nation’s fundamental issues of health, environmental protection, sustainability, economic growth, and national security.  He worked hand-in-hand with Members to seek solutions to these pressing challenges.

“Early on, Congressman Waxman understood the depth of the HIV/AIDS epidemic – and I saw firsthand his leadership in the fight to invest in AIDS research, support treatments and care, and pass the landmark Ryan White Care Act.  Before many of our colleagues, Henry saw the gathering storm of climate change – and acted to strengthen the Clean Air Act, enact the Energy Independence and Security Act, and pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act.  From the first days of his long career, Henry recognized the urgent necessity of delivering quality, affordable health care to all – and together, with his service as Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee, we honored that commitment with the Affordable Care Act.

“The list of Henry Waxman’s achievements could go on and on.  He remains as dedicated to his constituents and to the Congress today as he did during his first term nearly 40 years ago.  It has been a true privilege to call him colleague and a distinct honor to know him as a friend.  I thank him for his leadership, partnership, and dedication to our country, and I wish him and his family only the best in the years to come.”
