Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of a bipartisan measure to extend emergency unemployment insurance:
“Once again, Republicans have shown contempt and disregard for the 1.7 million Americans and counting who have been cut off from emergency unemployment insurance.
“These hard working Americans lost their jobs through no fault of their own, and depend on this lifeline to carry their families through the crisis of unemployment as they search for work. The failure to extend emergency unemployment insurance is itself costing those Americans 240,000 jobs this year alone. It is immoral, irresponsible, and indefensible to refuse to renew this emergency support when long-term unemployment rates remain so high.
“Republicans must stop denying so many millions of American families the economic security they earned, and work with Democrats to pass an extension of emergency unemployment insurance without further delay.”
