Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to the agreement reached by the United States and Russia to eliminate Syria's arsenal of chemical weapons:
“This morning, the United States and Russia established a framework that will advance the timely removal and ultimate destruction of chemical weapons in Syria. Thanks to President Obama’s steadfast leadership, we are making significant progress in our efforts to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction, a pillar of our national security, through diplomatic efforts. It is significant that this agreement will allow for enforcement under Chapter VII of the UN Charter in the event the regime does not comply.
“The firm and united response agreed upon today to end Syria’s deadly use of chemical weapons was only made possible by a clear and credible threat of the use of force by the United States. Under the effective leadership of Secretary Kerry, we will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people and pursue every path that will help bring about a long-lasting resolution to the crisis in Syria.”
