Pelosi Statement on Departure of SEC Chairman Mary Schapiro

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro announced that she will leave her post on December 14, 2012.  President Obama has nominated Commissioner Elisse Walter to serve as the next SEC Chair:
“Chairman Mary Schapiro served the American people in exemplary fashion throughout her tenure at the Securities and Exchange Commission.  Assuming her post in the aftermath of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, she acted swiftly and effectively to restore confidence in our financial markets, strengthen oversight of our financial system, and protect investors from the recklessness of some on Wall Street.
“Through her commitment, determination, leadership, and strong enforcement efforts, and despite attempts by Republicans in Congress to defund and defang the SEC, Chairman Schapiro helped lay the foundation for greater accountability, responsibility, and transparency on Wall Street.
“We thank Chairman Schapiro for her service, dedication, and hard work over the course of nearly four years at the SEC and wish her well in the future.  Members of Congress look forward to working with Commissioner Elisse Walter to continue the vital, important work of the SEC in the years to come.”
