Pelosi Names Congressman Becerra as Assistant to the Speaker

Washington, D.C. - Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today congratulating Congressman Xavier Becerra on his nomination as Assistant to the Speaker in the upcoming 110th Congress:

'Since his election to Congress in 1992, Congressman Xavier Becerra's keen intellect and substantive policy expertise has been crucial in charting a new course for America's working families.   I look forward to working with Mr. Becerra in his new role as an Assistant to the Speaker.

'Congressmen Becerra is the first Latino to serve on the Ways and Means Committee, and he has been a strong leader in mapping out a new direction for working families.  He has worked to improve the Social Security program for women and minorities, to combat poverty among the working poor through our welfare laws, and to strengthen Medicare and ensure its long-term viability.

'As former Chair of the Hispanic Caucus, he has proven himself a national leader on issues of importance to the Latino community, the nation's largest and fastest growing minority.  His appointment to the new Democratic Leadership will strengthen the voices of Latinos across the country.'
