Unemployment Compensation Extension Act

By a vote of 272-152, the House passed the Senate amendments to the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act (H.R. 4213) on July 22nd and the President signed the bill into law. This emergency legislation will extend unemployment insurance (UI) benefits to millions of Americans families, which Republicans have held up for more than 7 weeks causing an estimated 2.5 million families to lose their lifeline that they have earned through their work.

The bill--virtually identical to the House passed Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act--would extend the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) and Extended Benefits programs through November 30, 2010. This would retroactively restore benefits to people who may have started losing their benefits as early as the end of May, some after just 26 weeks.

This is urgently needed after weeks of Senate Republicans' ongoing obstruction of job creating legislation that extended critical unemployment benefits to help Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own make ends meet as they look for a new job. We will not abandon these families.
