KLBJ-AM (Austin, Texas): Pelosi visits Austin to discuss clean energy

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with top officials at Austin Energy, U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett, and members of the Austin City Council today to learn about the city's strategies to reduce carbon emissions and promote the use of renewable energy.

Rep. Pelosi said some of the methods adopted by Austin have already found their way into a bill passed by the U.S. House that would reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil.

'From what I've heard this morning, the proud boast of 'clean energy capital of the nation' is one very legitimate one,' Pelosi said following her meeting at City Hall.

'This issue of energy security and climate change and is the flagship issues of the New Direction Congress,' she said, referring to the Democratic majority in the House. 'We see it as an economic issue, we see it as a national security issue, and we see it as a moral issue.'

Pelosi is optimistic an energy bill that contains tax credits for hybrid cars, renewable energy, and biofuels will eventually make it to the desk of President Bush for his consideration.

The measure has passed the House and a modified version has passed the Senate. 'The President has been open to discussing such legislation and signing such legislation,' she said.
