Health Insurance Reform - DAILY MYTHBUSTER: Paying for Abortions?

Health insurance reform opponents continue to spread myths about components of America's Affordable Health Choices Act.  Now they are saying the bill will use taxpayer money to pay for abortions, but the facts--and independent analyses--have disproven this myth.

Myth: The House bill will force taxpayers to pay for abortions.

Fact: The latest version of the House bill continues longstanding federal policy, which currently bars federal funding for paying for abortions except in the case of rape, incest, or to save the life of the woman--but allows private insurance companies to offer abortion coverage.  The bill preserves the status quo in abortion policy.  In fact, the bill clearly spells out that no federal funds can be used to pay for abortions except in the case of rape, incest, or to save the life of the woman--including that no affordability credits will pay for coverage in private or public insurance.

That is why the independent Pulitzer prize-winning Politifact called this myth “False” and wrote, “we don't see anything in the [House] plans that would require taxpayers to foot the bill for that… In fact, in a key version of the bill -- the one passed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee -- members went to great pains to include an amendment to ensure that federal money is not used for abortion coverage… we don't see anything to support [the] claim that taxpayers would subsidize abortions...” [Find More Facts Here]
