Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after Senate Republicans voted to block the Veterans Jobs Corps bill, which would have provided $1 billion over five years to assist veterans in finding jobs:
“It is a national shame that our brave veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan return from war and have to fight for a job here at home. But today when Senate Democrats tried to pass a fully paid-for bill that will put veterans to work, Republicans said no.
“Once again, Republicans have put politics before progress by blocking legislation to employ those who have worn our nation’s uniform as firefighters and police officers and in conservation jobs on public lands and to use their expert military training for civilian jobs. House Republicans have rejected a similar proposal in committee.
“This is a travesty for Congress to leave town to face the voters without getting this important jobs bill done. Just as our service members pledge to leave no one behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind when they come home.”
