More than $45 million in grants and loans from the federal stimulus package will provide high-speed Internet access to 7,500 homes, businesses and community institutions in four Southwest Virginia localities.
“It is critical that we make these investments,” U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-9th, said Monday as he announced the funding package during a news conference at the Weber City Town Hall. “This infrastructure is the foundation of our future economic growth.”
The broadband package consists of $31.5 million in grants and $13.6 million in low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Recovery Act Broadband Program. The money will provide new Internet connections to 24 communities in the planning district's four localities. By the time the new broadband connections are installed, Boucher said, more than 85 percent of the homes and businesses in those localities will have high-speed Internet access.
Having high-speed Internet access also makes the region a strong candidate for new large-scale data centers that would host the vast amounts of digital content people access from their mobile phones and home computers, said Paul Elswick, president of Sunset Digital Communications, which will spend the next three years installing the new connections….. Associated Press - 2 Va. broadband projects get stimulus funding
Two projects in southwestern Virginia will receive federal stimulus funding to provide high-speed Internet access in rural areas.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide a $7.45 million loan and a $17.4 million grant to the Scott County Telephone Cooperative. The funding will be used to provide broadband service to about 12,000 residents, 80 businesses and 16 community institutions.
A $6.06 million loan and a $14.16 million grant will go to the Lenowisco Planning District Commission to build a fiber-optic network. Vilsack says the network will provide broadband access to more than 42,000 residents, an estimated 1,550 businesses and 100 community institutions. [9/7/10]

Sacramento State's science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, programs got a boost this past year from President Barack Obama's 2009 stimulus package, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
About eight Sac State STEM projects have been awarded more than $1 million in stimulus funds since last year.
The California State University system as a whole received $62 million in stimulus funds to support roughly 200 STEM projects on 22 campuses, according to a CSU press release.
Other stimulus-funded Sac State projects went toward a study of computer security, a math-teaching program, equipment and post-graduate work for biochemistry projects and 48 work-study jobs. [9/8/10]
The Daily Tar Heel (North Carolina) - Grant creates green jobs at UNC
… universities are using federal funds to create internships in a sector that the Obama administration has repeatedly said will lead the U.S. out of the recession.
North Carolina received $5.6 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act this summer to create more than 400 jobs and internships in the renewable or “green” energy sector. The N.C. State Energy Office is now in the process of distributing the grant money to universities, private businesses and public agencies to train students and recent graduates for future jobs in the sector.
UNC-CH received a $324,736 grant for a green energy internship program which will be distributed by the University's Institute for the Environment. [9/8/10]
Associated Press - DOE giving $575 million in carbon capture grants
The Energy Department is awarding $575 million for carbon capture research-and-development projects in 15 states.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu calls the money a 'major step' in efforts to reduce carbon dioxide from industrial plants. It's being funded from the economic stimulus law. [9/7/10]
