Bloomberg - NIH Stimulus Money Adds Jobs and Research After Funding Lag
The U.S. National Institutes of Health has created or saved 50,000 jobs with its $10 billion in federal stimulus funds, boosting medical research and returning $2.25 on the dollar in goods and services, the agency's director Francis Collins said.
Collins, appointed by President Barack Obama in August, said the Bethesda, Maryland-based organization aims to accelerate drug development, promote research on rare, neglected diseases and cut health-care costs.
The NIH is aiming to prove that science is an important investment in the economy's recovery as budgeting decisions are being made for the 2011 fiscal year, Collins said. The 50,000 jobs the agency created in the first year with stimulus money “are high-paying, quality jobs that are employing people with considerable skills that we'd hate to see migrating overseas.” [12/31/09]
The Press Democrat (California) - New program will bring 400 jobs to Sonoma County residents
Hundreds of low-income Sonoma County residents will get jobs this year with the federal government paying their wages through September.
The subsidized employment program is funded by the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which passed in February and was meant to right a staggering national economy.
The nine-month program is expected to place about 400 people -- many of them welfare recipients -- in prevailing wage jobs at non-profit organizations, public agencies and private companies.
The county's human resources department is administering the $5.4 million program, which officially starts Monday. It awarded Goodwill Industries the $600,000 contract to run the program's day-to-day operations, including matching people to jobs. The Durham News (North Carolina) - City cashes in on stimulus money
The City of Durham raked in close to $13.7 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in 2009, according to the City Manager's office.
So far, the city has spent $2.5 million of its 'stimulus' receipts, providing for 270 jobs retained, filled or created including the summer youth work program.
The Public Works Department was the most stimulated city agency, getting $6.9 million (numbers are rounded) for tasks…The City Manager's office got $2.2 million for energy-saving measures. Workforce Development received $1.3 million worth of stimulation for training and wages. Community Development took in another $1.3 million for housing rehabilitation and preventing homelessness. The Police Department got $1.5 million, including a $724,497 competitive grant from the U.S. Justice Department. [1/1/10]
Herald Times Reporter (Wisconsin) - Stimulus projects start at Manitowoc schools
The Manitowoc School District has implemented several initiatives using the federal stimulus money it was awarded earlier this year.
More than $2 million in grants were earmarked to fund Title 1 initiatives and programs supporting the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Marcia Flaherty, the district's director of elementary and secondary education, said the more than $700,000 in Title I grants went to fund after-school tutoring programs, mostly in reading but also in math.
The money is paying 23 employees, she said, mostly teachers and aides working at before- and after-school programs. [1/4/10]
