Rep. Pete Sessions, the firebrand conservative from Texas, has relentlessly assailed the Democratic stimulus efforts as a package of wasteful 'trillion-dollar spending sprees' that was 'more about stimulating the government and rewarding political allies than growing the economy and creating jobs.'

But that didn't stop the Republican lawmaker from seeking stimulus money behind the scenes for the Dallas suburb of Carrollton after the GOP campaign against the 2009 stimulus law quieted down.

Sessions was hardly alone. Scores of Republicans …who voted against the stimulus law subsequently wrote letters seeking funds.

Michele Bachmann has campaigned saying the stimulus was a 'failure' and has criticized it repeatedly, including in a Townhall.com blog in January headlined 'Stimulus is not creating jobs.'

Yet despite her vocal opposition to the law, the founder of the House Tea Party Caucus quietly sent at least six letters to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood urging stimulus funding for transportation projects in her district.

In one of them, in support of $300 million in spending for the $700 million replacement-bridge project crossing the St. Croix River, Bachmann cited a MnDOT estimate that the project would create nearly 3,000 jobs.

…U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts and U.S. Reps. Jerry Moran, Todd Tiahrt and Lynn Jenkins all voted against the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, but all wrote letters seeking government spending under the act, according to the report.

Moran, R-Kan., who is now the GOP candidate for Senate, wrote to LaHood in support of a grant for the intermodal facility near Gardner. Moran also wrote to Energy Secretary Steven Chu to support a proposal from Exide Technologies for a grant for manufacturing advanced batteries.

Jenkins, R-Kan., wrote LaHood in favor of a project to spend money on improving freight rail lines, saying it was needed to help the Kansas economy. [10/18/10]

Passaic County has repaved nearly 50 miles of roads with federal stimulus funds…

Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. held a press conference at the busy intersection of Valley Road and Preakness Avenue on Monday morning to tout the $10.2 million that Passaic County had poured into road resurfacing projects paid for with federal dollars.

'Right here in Wayne, our roads and bridges received $3 million from the Recovery Act for resurfacing and upgrades along 15 miles of roadway,' Pascrell said. 'The township's shopping centers, grocery stores, small businesses and hard-working residents will all be better served by roads that can bring customers in, ship goods out, and help provide the community a road to a more prosperous tomorrow.'

'During these tough economic times, Passaic County simply could not have undertaken these road resurfacing projects without the assistance received through the Recovery Act,' he said. Recovery Act money jump-started the projects and allowed county government to stabilize taxes, he said. [10/19/10]

McNC.com (North Carolina) - House Leaders Tour Economic Stimulus Projects

Leaders toured several projects around Raleigh on Monday that have benefited from the massive stimulus package passed by the federal government last year.

Congressmen David Price, Brad Miller and Bob Etheridge made stops around Raleigh including one at the City's Transit Operations Center, which is under construction on Poole Road.

City officials said $11.6 million of stimulus money is helping pay for the $21 million facility that will house and maintain Capital Area Transit buses.

Congressman Price said the goal of the stimulus act was to improve the economy and create or sustain jobs.

Government figures said the stimulus package funded about 25,000 jobs in North Carolina, and that the state has received more than $2 billion in funding. [10/18/10]

Governor David Paterson, Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and other officials broke ground Monday on phase I of the construction for Moynihan Station.

Prior to the groundbreaking, Governor Paterson and Secretary LaHood signed a final grant agreement providing $83 million in Recovery Act funds to New York through the U.S. Department of Transportation's 'Transportation Initiatives Generating Economic Recovery' (TIGER) program.

The future Moynihan Station will improve passenger safety and security for the more than 550,000 people that pass through Penn Station on a daily basis and will be a catalyst for growth. Completion of the long awaited station will create an economic engine to restart development across the entire West Side; growth that has stalled with the national economic downtown. [10/19/10]
