Like many small businesses caught in the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, Tri-State Biodiesel was struggling to find capital last year in the middle of a credit crunch…In the end, [Founder and Chief Executive Brent] Baker got a $50,000, three-year loan at a reasonable rate from Boc Capital, a lender that received $750,000 from the federal government thanks to the 2009 stimulus bill last year, to help small businesses just like Tri-State Biodiesel.
When President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law in February 2009 to create jobs and promote spending, the law included $56.1 million for microloans for small businesses, to be doled out through the Small Business Administration through September. [8/11]

Holland Township hopes to save some green by going green.
The township will replace light fixtures in three facilities with new energy efficient lighting with the help of a $43,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant managed by Ottawa County.
The grant is part of $343,000 the county received from the ARRA to pass through to 22 townships and cities.
The new light fixtures would be outfitted with new, energy-efficient bulbs. The public works building project is expected to pay for itself in 2.2 years, township office in 5.1 years and parks department building in six years.
“That's a pretty good payback, a pretty good energy savings,” Township Treasurer Vince Bush said at Thursday's meeting. [8/11]

Timberline Lodge was built during the Great Depression as what - in modern parlance - we would call an economic recovery project.
Now, history is repeating itself: Timberline Lodge is again benefiting from economic recovery dollars, this time courtesy of President Barack Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
Mt. Hood National Forest won $4.25 million in ARRA funds from the U.S. Forest Service last July for several projects at Timberline Lodge, including rebuilding one of its chimneys, painting its exterior and increasing its energy efficiency by replacing the original windows still in guest rooms.
The central purpose of all the activity at Timberline is, of course, “putting people to work,” [Mt. Hood National Forest spokesman Rick] Acosta said. [8/11]
