Pelosi Statement on UN Security Council Resolution on Israeli Settlements
San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the UN Security Council resolution on Israeli settlements voted on today. The U.S. abstained in the vote.
“The only durable resolution to the Palestinian conflict is one that is negotiated and agreed to by Israelis and Palestinians themselves – not one imposed by the United Nations. That is why President Obama and Secretary Kerry have worked tirelessly to try to bring Israeli and Palestinian leaders to the table for direct and constructive talks.
“While adding settlements does not move us closer to peace, neither does this troubling UN resolution. The two-state solution has been the bedrock of peace efforts between Israelis and Palestinians for decades. The resolution passed by the UN Security Council today does not bring us closer to this goal.
“President Obama has been a staunch and steadfast supporter of Israel. Under his leadership, the U.S. signed the largest security aid package for Israel in American history, and at his direction, the U.S. and Israel have engaged in unprecedented security cooperation. The United States’ commitment to Israel’s security is and will remain unbreakable.”
