Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released this statement on the passing of former Congressman Robert Michel of Illinois, a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, who served as Republican Leader of the House for 14 years:
“Former House Republican Leader Robert Henry Michel was a great American statesman. With his courage, integrity, and grace, Leader Michel embodied the greatest values of his generation and the highest ideals of our nation.
“Leader Michel dedicated his life to serving the country he so dearly loved. Through his valor during World War II and his leadership in the People’s House, this son of immigrants strengthened our democracy. In his nearly 40 years of service in the House, Leader Michel put his constituents, veterans, and the American people first. In treating his colleagues with civility and respect, regardless of their party affiliation, Leader Michel earned the admiration of generations of legislators.
“It was a joy to behold Leader Michel’s devotion to his late wife, Corrine, and his profound love for their children. May it be a source of comfort to his family, the people of Illinois, and all who loved him, that so many join in celebrating the life of this great American.”
