Cinco de Mayo
On Cinco de Mayo, the people of Mexico celebrate the victory over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The defeat by a poorly armed militia over the larger and better equipped French army is a source of pride to the people of Mexico.
Today, we honor the rich contributions to the United States of Mexican-Americans, and all Hispanics — a great source of pride, and of strength, for our country.
Our nation has been sustained and strengthened by families who have come to the United States hoping for a better life and striving for a brighter future; they have helped make America more American.
