Pelosi Dear Colleague: All Hands on Deck – A Call for Suggestions to Improve the Affordable Care Act
Dear Democratic Colleague,
Congratulations and thank you for your leadership in last week’s victory for the American people: protecting the Affordable Care Act and defeating Republicans’ monstrosity of a bill.
I am deeply grateful to the Caucus for heeding the all-hands-on-deck call to action. Our inside maneuvering was amplified in a very strong way by outside mobilization. The town halls, roundtables and events you held around the nation galvanized the opposition to repealing the ACA and stirred the American people to action – including many who had never been involved before. It was a remarkable achievement.
Social media made a big difference in our success. Our unity made a big difference to social media. Now, strengthened by our unity, we must finalize our next steps.
After the collapse of TrumpCare, we must ensure that the Trump Administration does not sabotage the ACA out of spite. Then, we can work to improve and update the Affordable Care Act and the health security it provides tens of millions of Americans.
When we fought President Bush on privatizing Social Security, we succeeded because we were unified and curbed our enthusiasm to freelance. With compliments to the leadership of our Ranking Members Richie Neal, Frank Pallone, Bobby Scott and John Yarmuth, I am asking Members to send them any suggestions for improving the Affordable Care Act as soon as possible. We can then discuss these suggestions in our Caucus and be prepared at the earliest possible time to go forward. It would be my hope to create a list of priorities to engage with our colleagues, with social media and advocacy groups, and perhaps even with the President.
Defeating the repeal of the Affordable Care Act was a victory for the health of the American people and the health of our democracy. Please make your views known to these Ranking Members or to me as soon as possible as we will discuss them at a Leader’s Meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, March 29 at 9:00 a.m. in HVC-215.
Thank you again for your leadership in last week’s thrilling success.
