Pelosi Statement on President Obama Signing Bipartisan Law to Prevent Veteran Suicide

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement after President Obama signed into law H.R. 203, the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act, bipartisan legislation that addresses the suicide epidemic among America’s veterans.

“We owe our veterans a sacred pledge: that just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we must leave no veteran behind here at home.  In the past decade, hundreds of thousands of new patients seeking mental health services have entered VHS, requiring more accessible services to meet demand.  Today, President Obama signed the Clay Hunt SAV Act into law as a step forward in preventing suicide and overcoming mental health challenges for America’s veterans, their families and caregivers.

“Named in honor of late Iraq and Afghanistan War veteran Marine Corporal Clay Hunt, who committed suicide in 2011 after unsuccessful efforts to get help, the Clay Hunt SAV Act expands access and coordinates our efforts to provide the best mental health care to our returning heroes.  This bill was brought to Congress with a clarion call from the unwavering determination of Corporal Hunt’s parents, veterans and mental health advocates, and the leadership of Representatives Tim Walz, Tammy Duckworth and Jeff Miller.

“Twenty-two veterans take their lives every day, leaving thousands of loved ones whose lives will never be the same.  As we celebrate the signing of this law, we must continue our support for the veterans struggling with the seen and unseen scars of war and renew our commitment to serving our veterans as well as they have served us.”
