The families of the victims of gun violence deserve more than our thoughts and prayers – they deserve real, urgent and long-overdue action to end this crisis.  But just two days after the worst mass shooting in American history, House Republicans refused to even begin a bipartisan, common sense process to address the gun violence epidemic.       

Thank you very much, Leader Schumer, for bringing us all together here.  It’s an honor to be here with you, with the Ranking Members on the Senate side of the Budget Committee, Mr. [Bernie] Sanders and on the Finance Committee, Mr. [Ron] Wyden. 

President Trump and Republicans would have you believe that the ‘biggest winners will be the everyday American workers’ in their tax ‘reform’ plan, even though they refuse to guarantee that their plan won’t raise taxes on hard-working families.  In reality, the Ryan-McConnell tax framework cuts taxes for the wealthiest, raises taxes on middle class families and adds trillions of dollars to the deficit.

Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Speaker Ryan calling for the creation of a Select Committee on Gun Violence and to bring the King-Thompson Background Check Legislation to the House Floor for a vote following the attack in Las Vegas, the largest mass shooting in our history.

This morning, our nation awoke to news of the largest mass shooting in our history.  All of America grieves for the innocent men and women whose lives were cruelly cut short by this tragedy, and our prayers are with the families of those wounded and missing.

Republicans have long peddled the idea that tax cuts for the wealthy few pay for themselves and in pitching the Ryan-McConnell tax framework this weekend, Speaker Ryan was no different.

Upon unveiling the Ryan-McConnell tax framework, Republicans would have you believe that their plan exclusively benefits the middle class.  However, on this morning’s Sunday Shows both Speaker Paul Ryan and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin could not promise that their plan gives tax relief for working Americans – because it won’t.

Representative Nancy Pelosi might have retired from Congress had Hillary Clinton been elected, content that she was leaving the government in capable female hands.

“One of the reasons I stayed here is because I thought Hillary Clinton would win, we’d have a woman president and so there would be a woman not at a seat at the table, but at the head of the table for the world,” said Ms. Pelosi, the liberal Californian and longtime leader of House Democrats.

This month, House Democrats kept the drum beating on their bold economic agenda A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future by introducing two new planks to increase jobs for hard-working Americans.  Democrats proposed the Child Care for Working Families Act to offer affordable child care and early learning, as well as a universal high-speed internet initiative to increase accessibility in rural community. 

Secretary Price should never have been in this role in the first place.  The American people deserve a Secretary of Health and Human Services who believes in health care for all Americans.
