Pelosi: President Obama’s Budget Will Be a Statement of Our Nation’s Values

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the White House’s preview of President Obama’s budget for fiscal year 2015:

“President Obama’s budget will, once again, be a clear statement of our nation’s values – focused on creating jobs, strengthening the middle class, and responsibly reducing the deficit.  His Opportunity, Growth, and Security Initiative will make the investments needed to expand our economy, support education, manufacturing, research, and clean energy, and prepare our workers for the jobs of tomorrow.  Across the board, his proposals are designed to close the opportunity gap and build ladders of opportunity for all.

“House Democrats have stood behind President Obama’s honest efforts in recent years to forge a bipartisan grand bargain with congressional Republicans.  In the course of those negotiations, he put chained CPI on the table as a gesture of good faith; yet Republican leaders were unwilling to budge or close a single unfair tax loophole, and decided to walk away from opportunities to find common ground.  Democrats applaud the President for eliminating chained CPI from his budget, and we look forward to working across the aisle to adopt a responsible fiscal framework.

“Democrats and Republicans recently came together to establish clear guidelines for budgets and to return the budget process to regular order.  It wasn’t an ideal solution for either side, but it was a sign of what we can achieve when we act in a bipartisan way on behalf of our constituents.  Let’s act in that same spirit to enact legislation that enables us to honor our pledge to build an economy that works for everyone.”
