San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the Affordable Care Act having enabled more than 3 million young adults gain coverage by remaining on their parents’ health insurance until age 26:
“The Affordable Care Act has given new security to millions of young people just finding their feet in the job market – enabling them to stay on their parents’ health plans until age 26. For years, many insurance companies would kick young adults off their parents’ health plan once they turned 19 or stopped being a full-time student; before the opening of the health insurance marketplaces, these young people were left with few options to secure meaningful coverage.
“Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, over 3 million young adults have gained coverage through their parents’ plans, including more than 435,000 young Californians. Many more young adults will be newly eligible for Medicaid or premium support in the marketplace. In fact, nearly 5 in 10 single, uninsured young people may be able to purchase health insurance for $50 per month or less.
“Republicans should stop trying to pull the rug out from under the millions of young people who have gained coverage because of the Affordable Care Act. Republicans should work with Democrats to strengthen the health law, and help ensure that all young adults have access to the quality, affordable coverage they deserve.”
