Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after Senate Republicans twice blocked a vote to restore emergency unemployment benefits:
“Today’s votes in the Senate are devastating news to millions of unemployed Americans and their families across the country.
“Failing to extend emergency unemployment insurance will savage families, slow our economy, and cost us 240,000 jobs this year alone. The long-term unemployment rate is nearly double what it was the last time Congress allowed emergency measures to expire. But Republicans have decided that they don’t care about the facts or the voices of the more than 1.5 million Americans reeling from the loss of the lifeline they relied on to support their families as they look for work.
“Republicans refusal to extend emergency unemployment insurance is cruel, shortsighted, and immoral. Today, they have shown just how little they care about the jobless in America.”
