Pelosi Statement on Women’s History Month

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of Women’s History Month:

“During Women’s History Month, we honor the giants who paved the path toward a nation more equal and more free, who reached for the ballot and pushed forward the cause of justice, who still inspire us to advance the promise of equality.  We celebrate a turning point in our history: the moment, 100 years ago, when women marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to demand the vote.  Their efforts helped make suffrage a reality and ensured a brighter future for us all.

“As we take pride in a past of progress, there is more work to do.  Women still make only 77 cents for every dollar made by men.  Too many women remain mired in poverty, unable to care and provide for their families.  With the sequester taking effect, women and families face deep cuts to their health, safety, and economic security.

“Yesterday, a bipartisan coalition came together to strengthen and reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act; today, let us pledge to build on this success and overcome the challenges that remain.  Let’s work to ensure all women can earn a living equal to their efforts.  Let’s empower more women in fields of innovation.  Let’s act to preserve, protect, and defend the blessing of equality in our time.”
