“This backlog is a challenge to the conscience of our country,” Pelosi said.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called on UC Davis’ law graduates to “pursue the work of justice.”

“Pelosi condemned those actions Thursday, saying those responsible “were wrong and must be held accountable.” But the Democratic leader was also quick to link the scandal to the broader issue of campaign finance, arguing that the episode would never have happened if Congress overhauled the system to eliminate so-called 501(c)(4) groups altogether.”

“There needs to be more clarity in the law regarding the activities of tax exempt organizations along with greater disclosure and transparency,” Pelosi said in the statement Monday.

“Today Detroit is still engaged in a great freedom walk … and a campaign to preserve the dignity of all Americans,” said Pelosi, the Democratic House minority leader, in a nod to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the 58th annual Fight for Freedom Fund dinner

“Nothing brings more money to the economy than the education of children,” Pelosi said.

“Many more family members have come forward, whether it’s somebody’s sister, brother, cousin, uncle, mother, father, whatever it is, have come forward as to their interest in marriage equality,” Pelosi said. “And that’s been translated into our popular culture, whether it’s TV or movies or whatever, and so we’re at a different place. And so it’s a generational change as well. You look at these statistics and you’ll see a generation gap in terms of approval of marriage equality.”

“For Edie Windsor and millions like her, the journey has been long, hard, and defined too often by stigma, injustice and inequality. For all Americans, the fight for civil rights has been a defining cause for our country. With the Supreme Court’s action, that journey and that fight can once again bear the fruits of progress. We can bend the moral arc of history once more toward justice and secure a future of equality for all American families. Today, I hope justice prevails for Windsor and for all LGBT Americans.”
