Speaker Nancy Pelosi delivered remarks this morning at the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) annual membership meeting. The AHA is the national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities.

“President Obama’s fiscal commission is charged with making decisions to rein in our national debt and restore accountability and common sense to our budget. But we must remember how we got here in the first place.”

“For more than a decade, Congressional Republicans failed to provide robust oversight of Wall Street, which crippled our financial system and resulted in 8 million jobs lost for America’s workers. Tonight, Senate Democrats tried to begin debate on tough accountability and transparency for big banks and for Wall Street – but Republicans said no. Once again, they sided with Wall Street over Main Street.”

“Our servicemen and women and their families deserve the best care and support our country can offer.”

“The thoughts and prayers of Congress are with the families and loved ones of those lost on the oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Their labors strengthen our nation; their loss is a source of grief to the American family.”

“The new law in Arizona is a reminder of the need for urgent, bipartisan action at the federal level to enact comprehensive immigration reform to secure our borders, keep our nation safe, uphold the rule of law, protect our workers and our economy, unite families, and provide a pathway to legalization.”

“I’m committed to finding funding for the Pigford and Cobell settlements. Doing so will finally bring a long-delayed end to an injustice and ensure that victims are fully compensated for past failures of judgment at United States Department of Agriculture and Department of the Interior.”

“WellPoint’s practice of dropping anyone’s coverage when they get sick – whether a woman with breast cancer or any other patient – is exactly the kind of insurance company abuse our new health care law prohibits.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke on the House floor this afternoon in support of a resolution congratulating Reverend Daniel P. Coughlin on his tenth year of service as chaplain of the House of Representatives.
