President Barack Obama yesterday devoted his first full speech in two months to the economy’s strength. It was just what Nancy Pelosi wanted.

Today, October 1, 2014, marks one year since the government shut down. On that day, the Republicans chose to inflict damage to the economy. For 16 days they kept the government shut down.

“Freedom from fear and abuse is a basic human right. Yet it is estimated that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Millions of women will confront these violent acts this year. Domestic violence terrorizes women, children, and men in homes across America – and we must not allow it to continue.”

“Thank you very much, Mr. Speaker. It’s an honor to join you in welcoming Prime Minister Modi to the Capitol of the United States – to the center of the oldest democracy in the world, the leader of the largest democracy in the world.”

“Nothing is more fundamental to our democracy or more essential to our future than ensuring the voices of all Americans are heard in our elections. Early voting is an indispensable resource for many citizens – especially people facing disadvantages – who may be unable to make it to the polls on Election Tuesday.”

Speaker Boehner was asked earlier today on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” whether he’d be able to rally his party to pass bipartisan immigration reform. His predictable response? “Absolutely.” But take a look at some of the other times the Speaker has assured the country of getting something done on immigration reform:

“Speaker Boehner’s excuse-laden defense of House Republicans’ record is laughable. The truth is that Speaker Boehner has presided over the two most unproductive sessions of Congress in history and intense internal party dysfunction that has driven Americans’ disapproval of Congress to record lows.”

Good news on the ACA just keeps coming in. A new report yesterday by HHS reveals that because the Affordable Care Act is reducing the number of uninsured, particularly in Medicaid expansion states, hospitals will save $5.7 billion this year in uncompensated care costs.

Another week, another report, and more great news for the Affordable Care Act – it continues to work for millions of Americans! According to an HHS report, consumers will have more choices as they shop for quality, affordable coverage on the Health Insurance Marketplace in 2015, because there will be a net 25 percent increase in the number of issuers offering Marketplace coverage.
