Pelosi Statement on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi today released the following statement to commemorate Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Day, which is observed annually as a national day of service on the third Monday of January:
“The life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was marked by a visionary commitment to our nation’s promise that, regardless of the circumstances of one’s birth, all people are created equal and are entitled to life, liberty and happiness. Fifty years after his tragic assassination, Dr. King’s clarion voice of truth and righteousness still rings out today.
“Dr. King’s struggle for civil rights, social and economic justice and equal opportunity advanced our nation in the journey toward a more perfect union. The power of his example inspired millions to bridge the gap between the inevitable and the impossible, and lit a fire in the hearts of Americans in every corner of the country. We all have a duty to advance Dr. King’s call to action and fight for better futures for every family, urged on by his words, ‘Our struggle is for genuine equality, which means economic equality.’ This year, Democrats will honor Dr. King’s legacy by holding teach-ins across the country to speak out about the grave consequences the GOP tax scam will have for hard-working families.
“On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial 55 years ago, Dr. King charged the nation to reject the prejudice and inequality of the status quo, and he challenged us to answer injustice with action. This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Democrats join Americans across the country in this moment of extraordinary challenges and opportunities to stand firm against those who preach bigotry and division by strengthening the cause of freedom and delivering the promise of progress for all of God’s children.”
