Pelosi Statement on the Passing of Paul Booth
Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on the passing of labor activist Paul Booth:
“It is with great sadness that our nation learned of the loss of an extraordinary leader and a passionate organizer, Paul Booth. Paul knew the importance of standing up for workers, for families and for a better future for all. On issue after issue – workers’ rights, fair pay, women’s rights, environmental protections – the progressive movement that Paul helped build carries forward the values that strengthen our democracy.
“Paul’s life was marked by a steadfast commitment to making a difference in the lives of America’s working families. Paul’s activism and organizing acumen were forged in the struggles of the 1960s, where he became an early leader in the civil rights, anti-war and pro-democracy movements. Later, Paul deployed his dogged activism in the fight to protect American workers during his four decades with AFSCME. He firmly believed that labor should be ‘missionaries for solidarity, for organizing, for growing our unions and for the fights for justice’ and dedicated himself to educate, organize and mobilize workers around the country.
“Paul was a progressive champion who never wavered in his belief in the promise of America. His work ensured that America’s workers continue to be the backbone of American democracy, always delivering progress to move our nation forward. May it be a comfort to his loving wife of 50 years, Heather, their sons, Gene and Dan, and the entire Booth family that so many share in their grief at this difficult time.”
