Pelosi Statement on Extreme, Dangerous Republican Gun Bill

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi issued this statement as Republicans prepared to push through a radical gun bill billed by the NRA as its “top legislative priority,” which would force every state to accept concealed handgun permits from all other states, meaning that the weakest concealed carry state laws would become the law of the land in all 50 states:

“Two months after two of the most deadly shootings in modern American history, Republicans are brazenly moving to hand the NRA the biggest item on its Christmas wish list.  Far from making Americans safer, this deadly, extreme Republican bill would make it legal for more dangerous and untrained people to carry loaded, hidden guns in more public places and would inexplicably try to make the weakest and most dangerous state concealed carry laws the law of the land in all 50 states.  With this bill, Republicans are overriding key state and local gun violence prevention protections across the country and inviting concealed weapons into schools, churches, bars and public lands.

“This deadly bill is the latest but certainly not the last Republican attempt to wipe out common-sense gun violence prevention laws.  Since the horrific attacks in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs alone, House Republicans have fought against strong reforms to life-changing background checks, refused to create a bipartisan Select Committee on Gun Violence and continued to push a radical bill that would flood our communities with silencers and armor-piercing bullets.

“The families of the victims of gun violence deserve real action, not the hypocrisy of a Republican Congress that offers prayers and pushes dangerous gun bills in the same breath.  Democrats will continue to fight for effective, long-overdue action to reduce the horror and heartbreak of gun violence.”
